Welcome to Year 7

Year 7 at Pennine School supports pupils aged 11–12 as they continue their journey within our specialist 10–18 provision. This year group focuses on helping pupils settle into secondary-aged learning while building confidence, emotional resilience and positive relationships.

For many pupils, Year 7 is a key stage for re-engaging with education following challenging or disrupted experiences. Teaching is highly personalised and delivered in small, supportive groups.

Learning and Curriculum

Pupils in Year 7 access a broad and balanced curriculum, adapted to meet individual needs and starting points. Learning may include:

  • English and Mathematics

  • Science and Humanities

  • PSHE and personal development

  • Physical education and outdoor learning

  • Creative and practical subjects

Lessons are structured to support engagement, consistency and progress, while allowing flexibility where needed.

Developing Independence

A key focus in Year 7 is supporting pupils to develop greater independence and confidence as learners. This includes:

  • Establishing routines and expectations

  • Encouraging positive learning behaviours

  • Supporting organisation and self-management

  • Building resilience and perseverance

Staff provide consistent guidance and encouragement to help pupils feel secure and successful.

Wellbeing and Support

Emotional wellbeing and safeguarding remain central to daily practice. Pupils are supported by a consistent staff team who understand their individual needs.

Targets are personalised and informed by Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans where applicable, and reviewed regularly in partnership with families and professionals.

Progression Within Pennine School

Year 7 supports pupils to build on the foundations established in earlier years and prepare for continued progression through the school. Progress is measured academically, socially and emotionally, with the emphasis on steady and meaningful development.
