Welcome to Year 9

Year 9 at Pennine School supports pupils aged 13–14 as they continue to develop confidence, independence and a positive attitude towards learning within our specialist 10–18 provision.

This year group plays an important role in preparing pupils for the next phase of their education. Pupils are supported to strengthen learning skills, build resilience and begin to explore future pathways in a supportive and structured environment.

Learning and Curriculum

Pupils in Year 9 access a broad and balanced curriculum that is adapted to meet individual needs and starting points. Learning may include:

  • English and Mathematics

  • Science and Humanities

  • PSHE and personal development

  • Physical education and outdoor learning

  • Creative, vocational and practical subjects

Teaching is carefully planned to build knowledge over time while remaining flexible and responsive to pupils’ needs.

Preparing for the Next Stage

A key focus in Year 9 is preparation for the transition into upper school. This includes:

  • Developing independence and responsibility for learning

  • Strengthening organisation and study skills

  • Exploring interests, strengths and future aspirations

  • Building confidence in decision-making

Where appropriate, pupils may begin to explore options and pathways that support future learning and progression.

Wellbeing and Support

Emotional wellbeing and safeguarding remain central to daily practice. Pupils are supported by a consistent staff team who understand their individual needs and experiences.

Personalised targets are informed by Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans where applicable and reviewed regularly in collaboration with families and professionals.

Progress and Development

Progress in Year 9 is measured holistically, recognising academic achievement alongside personal, social and emotional development. The emphasis is on steady progress, confidence and readiness for the next stage of education.
